It's been an exciting weekend of football. Firstly, Premiership team Tottenham Hotspur won the Carling Cup. This is a knockout tournament 淘汰賽 for all of the league teams 聯(lián)賽對 in football. It's like the FA Cup but with a lot less teams involved.

Tottenham Hotspur has not won a major trophy 重大的賽事 since they won the League Cup in 1999. The League Cup is the same tournament as the Carling Cup – it just had a different name back then.

    Special Flavour

Obviously it is tremendously satisfying to get a trophy. This one maybe has a special flavour to it because it was against a team that is supposedly superior to us in Chelsea.

    Juande Ramos, Tottenham Hotspur manager

Everyone is praising 贊揚 manager Juande Ramos for his work with the team. He said it was "tremendously satisfying 極度的令人滿意 to get a trophy". He claimed that this trophy had "a special flavour to it because it was against a team that is supposedly superior 強隊 to us in Chelsea".

By "special flavour", he means this trophy is particularly special to the team because they beat Chelsea, and Chelsea is perceived 被認(rèn)為 as a much better team than Tottenham Hotspur.

In addition to the Spurs victory, another game hit the headlines 上頭條 this weekend. Birmingham drew 踢平 against Arsenal 2-2 but the result was overshadowed 失色 by a horrific 非常糟的 injury Arsenal striker 前鋒 Eduardo received, after being tackled by Birmingham captain Martin Taylor.

The tackle occurred 發(fā)生 only three minutes into the game, but it resulted in 導(dǎo)致 Eduardo's leg being broken. Eduardo was stretchered off 被擔(dān)架抬出場 the pitch and rushed to hospital. Taylor was given a red card and sent off.

    Excessive

I feel that my comments about Martin Taylor were excessive. I said what I did in the heat of the moment.

    Arsene Wenger, Arsenal manager

Everyone has been talking about the tackle though. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was initially 最初 very angry and said he thought that Martin Taylor should never play football again.

However he later retracted 收回,撤回 his comments stating, "I feel that my comments about Martin Taylor were excessive 過分的. I said what I did in the heat of the moment 一時激動,大怒". He used the word "excessive" to mean that he thought his opinions were too strong and he didn't mean what he said.

"In the heat of the moment" means at the moment when a dramatic 戲劇化的 situation occurs. At a time like this, people don't think clearly and often just speak without thinking and Wenger is saying that this is the case with his comments about Taylor.

    Just a Blank

All I remember is that when I fell, I looked down at my foot and it had turned the other way. The rest is just a blank. My concentration is on making as quick a recovery as possible. I am determined to overcome this injury.

    Eduardo da Silva, Arsenal striker

Eduardo will now miss the rest of the season because of his injury: "All I remember is that when I fell, I looked down at my foot and it had turned the other way. The rest is just a blank 空白." If you have "a blank" it means you don't remember anything.

Arsene Wenger is worried he might be out of the game for much longer but Eduardo is hopeful: "My concentration is on making as quick a recovery as possible. I am determined to overcome 克服 this injury."
