1. break the news

break the news表示說出實(shí)情，更多的是“透露壞消息”。

I was devastated when the doctor broke the news to me.
當(dāng)醫(yī)生告訴我這個(gè)消息時(shí)，我簡(jiǎn)直要崩潰了。

如果要形容平靜地接受壞消息，有個(gè)表示是take it on the chin，也就是“經(jīng)受痛苦而處之泰然”。

有一句話是every cloud has a silver lining，意思是黑暗中總有一線光明，所以silver lining就可以表示(黑暗中的)一線光明。

還有引申含義表示“(不幸或不快中的)一線希望”。

The fall in inflation is the silver lining of the prolonged recession.
通貨膨脹率下降是長(zhǎng)期經(jīng)濟(jì)衰退中的一線希望。

3. swing by

杰帶全家人到他最喜歡的店里吃飯，可是全家人因?yàn)樾挠薪娴龠�沒來。

swing by/past (sth)尤指在前往別處的路上“順便快速訪問某地”。

I told Paul we’d swing by his place around 7.30.
我告訴保羅我們會(huì)在7點(diǎn)半左右很快地順便拜訪一下他家。
