Could you do without meat for 24 hours? Every year October 1st heralds World Vegetarian Day followed by a month of celebrating the vegetarian way of life.
October 1st every year heralds World Vegetarian Day. A day in which participants strive to keep meat free for 24 hours and heralds a month of vegetarian festivals and celebration. It's designed to tempt newcomers towards trying the way of life and a celebration for those that have already adopted it.
World Vegetarian Day was established by the North American Vegetarian Society in 1977 and was supported by the international vegetarian union a year later.
According to the days website 'it was created to promote the joy, compassion and life-enhancing possibilities of vegetarianism.' The group also created a Facebook event which they used to publicise the day. It does, however, come in the verge of spam with over four thousand people on 'awaiting reply' which means the site organisers have invited them, most likely without any indication.
It's an interesting idea and it doesn't hurt to try something new for a day. There are plenty of tasty and healthy vegetarian meals out there, freely available online so time to pick what I'll be having for dinner next October 1st.
